
Gaga has met with performing artist Lady Starlight during this time; after a performance at the Lollapalooza Festival in 2007 Gaga was signed by Vince Herbert to Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. As an apprentice songwriter for an internship with Famous Music Publishing, which was later purchased by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Gaga then signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. As a result, she was hired to write music for Britney Spears as well as labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. Gaga's debut album from 2008 The Fame, which she released in 2008, received only moderate radio airplay. The singer went on tour in Europe and the US to promote the album. However, it was not until her 2009 smash 'Just Dance that mainstream pop music truly was born. Gaga was suffering from a tear in the labrum in her right hip which she was nursing for several weeks in the hope that she would be able to continue the tour. Following her show in Toronto, Gaga was unable walk and was in extreme pain. She was admitted to the hospital, and her tour was canceled.
